Continuing Education Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required

· Producers and Title Agents must complete 24 credit hours of continuing education of which 3 should be ethics, every two years.
· Service Representatives or Producers who are employed by another Producer or Insurer to work only in the office of the employer and who are not licensed as a non-resident in any other state, must complete 12 hours of which 2 should be ethics per reporting period.
Regardless of what type of license(s) a producer has, he/she may take any approved course without regard to the course grouping.  However, 3 hours of the 24 must be approved as Ethics credits.

   Independent Adjusters must complete 24 hours biennially of which 3 should be ethics.

Compliance Date

· Licensees born in odd-numbered years will renew their license in odd years at the end of their birth month.
· Licensees born in even-numbered years will renew their license in even years at the end of their birth month.

Approved Course Delivery Methods

· Independent self-study online or written courses (passing grade of 70% required on a monitored final exam)
· Classroom
· Interactive Online
· Seminar

Exam Requirements

Self-study final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party (i.e. someone with no business or family relationship to the student.)

 

Course Subject Requirements

· Agents must complete 3 hours of ethics
· Producers or service representatives with only a 12 hour requirement must complete 2 hours of ethics
· All Alabama licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies are required to complete a one-time 3-credit course in flood.
· Producer's may not sell, solicit or negotiate long-term care insurance unless the individual is authorized as an insurance producer for accident and health or sickness and has completed a one-time eight (8) hour training course. Ongoing training of not less than four (4) hours every 24 months will be required during the biennial renewal cycle thereafter. 

Producers may take any course approved for continuing education credit in Alabama.

Carryover Credits

Excess credit hours earned in the previous biennial renewal period cannot be carried over to the next reporting period.

Course Repetition

Credit will not be given for course completed more than once in each reporting period.

Exemptions

  • Non-residents of reciprocal states who have met the home state's CE requirements.
  • Any producer whose license is limited to acting only as a producer for credit insurance, rental vehicle insurance, crop, portable electronic, travel, motor club, dental services, and legal services, or any combination thereof.
  • Newly licensed producers, service representatives, adjusters or title insurance agents licensed within 12 months of the renewal date.

 

Non-Residents

Non-resident agents are exempt from the CE requirement if they are in compliance with the requirements of their home state.


Credit Reporting

Cape will submit your credit hours to SBS within ten days of course completion. Course completion certificates are provided for your personal records.
