Continuing Education Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required

• Producers and Adjusters are required to take 24 hours biennially, which includes 3 hours of Ethics. 

Compliance Date

The biennium begins on the first day of the month following your birth month and ends on the last day of your birth month two years later.

Approved Course Delivery Methods

Agents may now take all 24 hours of their continuing education through classroom, correspondence, or any combination of the two.

  • Self-study online or written courses  (passing grade of 70% required on final exam)
  • Classroom
  • Seminar (only 75% of the requirement may be earned from company and/or agency sponsored courses)

Exam Requirements

Exams are open-book, and credit will be allowed only if the student passes the exam with a score of 70 percent or higher.

Course Subject Requirements

• At least 6 hours must be directly related to any line of authority for which the agent is actively licensed
• At least 3 hours must be specifically approved as Ethics.

-Long Term Care requirement must complete 8 hrs initial training and 4 hrs ongoing

-Annuity Training requirement must complete 4 hrs initial training

-Flood insurance requirement must complete 3 hrs training.

Carryover Credits

A maximum of 12 hours of classroom or correspondence credit may be carried over to the next reporting period.

Course Repetition

Courses may not be taken more than once within the same reporting period

Exemptions
• Non-resident agents who received their license through reciprocity and who have met the continuing education requirements of their home state.
• Limited lines licenses: Limited line credit, travel, crop, surety
• Agents who receive their license less than one full year before the end of their current continuing education biennium. (But, these agents are not exempt from the next biennium or thereafter)
• Agents who have a waiver from continuing education requirements because they are keeping their license for the sole purpose of receiving renewals or deferred commissions and have filed a supporting Affidavit for Exemption From Continuing Education with the Office of Insurance.

Credit Reporting

Cape will report credits to the Kentucky Department of Insurance no more than thirty days from course completion.

· Filing a Complaint with the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education

To file a complaint with the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education, each person filing must submit a completed “Form to File a Complaint” (PE-24) to the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education by mail to Capital Plaza Tower, Room 302, 500 Mero Street, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601. This form can be found on the website at www.kcpe.ky.gov .

·   Student Protection Fund

KRS 165A.450 requires each school licensed by the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary to contribute to a Student Protection Fund which will be used to pay off debt incurred due to the closing of a school, discontinuance of a program, loss of license, or loss of accreditation by a school or program. To file a claim against the Student Protection Fund, each person filing must submit a completed “Form for Claims Against the Student Protection Fund”. This form can be found on the website at www.kcpe.ky.gov .
