Continuing Education Requirements

Hours Required
24 credit hours, biennially
Compliance Date
The compliance date is the last day of the agent's birth month, biennially. If an agent was born in an odd year then their renewal period also ends in an odd year; if an agent was born in an even year then their renewal period also ends in an even year.
Approved Course Delivery Methods
Agents may take any combination of classroom, home-study or online courses.
Exam Requirements
Exams are open-book and a passing grade of 70% is required on final exams.
Courses over 16 credits require another person monitor the final exam. Courses less than 16 credits do not require that a monitor be present.
Course Subject Requirements
• Licensees must complete 3 credit hours in ethics each biennium.
• All Maine licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies are required to complete a one-time 3-credit course in flood.
• Producers who sell, solicit or negotiate Long Term Care insurance must be licensed for Accident and Health or Sickness or Life, and must complete a one-time 8-hour training course. In addition to the one-time training course, producers who sell LTC insurance must complete no less than 4 hours of ongoing LTC training every 24 months.
Carryover Credits
Excess CE credit hours may not be carried over to the next reporting period.
Course Repetition
Courses may not be taken more than once within a renewal period.
Exemptions
• Individuals holding limited licenses (such as title insurance) have no CE requirement.
• Individuals licensed less than one year at the time of the first CE compliance date are exempt for the first reporting period.
• Non-resident agents are exempt from the CE requirement if they are in compliance with the requirements of their home state.
Credit Reporting
Cape will report credits within 30 days of course completion. A certificate of completion is provided for the agent's records.
