WEST VIRGINIA Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

Hours Required

  • 24 credit hours are required biennially 3 of which are Ethics.
  • Producers who sell only pre-need burial insurance contracts or who engage solely in telemarketing insurance products using a scripted presentation that has been filed with and approved by the insurance commissioner must complete 6 hours, 3 of which must be in approved Ethics courses.
  • Insurance producers licensed for only credit, surety, travel, title, crop and car rental or any combination of these lines are not required to complete continuing education; however, the license must still be renewed every two years. 

 

Compliance Date

Producers and Viatical Settlement Brokers: Every two years on the last day of the producer's birth month. 

Company Adjusters, Crop Adjusters, Public Adjusters and Surplus Lines will continue to renew licenses  annually between March 1 and May 31.

Business Entities (Agencies) will continue to renew licenses annually between March 1st and June 30th.

 

Approved Course Delivery Methods

 

  • Classroom
  • Interactive Online, Independent online and written self-study courses (must score at least 70% on the final exam in order to receive credit)
  • Seminar 

 

Exam Requirements

  Self-study final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party (i.e. someone with no business or family relationship to the student). 

 

Course Subject Requirements

  • Ethics Training Requirement: All West Virginia licensed insurance producers must complete 3 credit hours in ethics. 
  • Flood Training Requirement: All West Virginia licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.  
  • Long Term Care Training Requirement: All active producers who sell, solicit or negotiate Long Term Care insurance must complete a one-time training course of no less than eight hours.   A 4-hour follow-up course must be completed every two-year licensing period after the period in which initial training was completed. .  Long Term Care training courses will count towards the producer’s 24 hour CE requirement.
  • Annuity Training Requirement:    All licensed producers who sell, solicit, or negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time 4 hour annuity course.

 

Carryover Credits

 Up to 6 hours may be carried over to the next reporting period for those that must complete more that 6 hours of CE during a reporting period. West Virginia does not allow for the carry-over of Ethics or Long-Term Care Credits. These credits will be carried over as general credits.

 

Course Repetition

  Credit will not be given for a course taken more than once within a biennium.

 

Exemptions

 

  • Non  Resident Producers, Adjusters
  • Individuals holding limited lines licenses for which an exam is not required
  • Individuals holding Limited Lines Credit Insurance Licenses

 

Non-Residents

 Non-residents are exempt from the West Virginia Continuing Education requirement, if they have met the requirements of their home state.

 

Credit Reporting

 Cape will report credits to Sircon within 30 days of course completion.  We provide a certificate of course completion for the agent’s records.

Producers will renew their licenses online through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR.com).  West Virginia will begin using the National Producer Number on all transactions.  Producers will be able to print their license cards within minutes of licensure.  There will be no charge for the first license print after applying and after renewal.
