Continuing Education Requirements

Hours Required
• 24 credit hours biennially for all resident insurance producers, consultants and surplus lines licensees including at least 3 credit hours of Ethics and at least 1 credit hour on changes in Montana insurance statutes and administrative rules
• 5 credit hours biennially for licensees who only hold a limited lines credit license
Adjusters must complete 24 hours biennially, which includes 3 hours Ethics and 1 hour on MT Legislative Changes.
Compliance Date
First day of the agent’s birth month biennially; agents born in odd years will renew in odd years, and agents born in even years will renew in even years.

Exam Requirements
Self-study final exams must be passed with a score of 70% or higher
Course Subject Requirements
• Resident and non-residents must complete 1 credit hour of Montana law, biennially
• Producers licensed for credit life/disability only must complete the 5 hour requirement in law, ethics, or limited lines credit.
• Producers, adjusters, public adjusters, or consultants other than an individual licensed only for surety bail bonds or for limited lines credit insurance shall, during each 24-month period, complete at least 3 credit hours of Ethics
Carryover Credits
There is no rollover or carry over of excess credit hours earned in one biennial period to the next biennial period.
Course Repetition
Courses may not be repeated for credit within a two (2) year period.
Exemptions
• Individuals with a temporary license.
• Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the calendar year that their license is issued.
• Individuals with a limited line license for which an exam is not required.
• Individuals licensed only for surety insurance who sell bail bonds
• Non-resident agents if their home state requires CE and has a reciprocal agreement with Montana.
Credit Reporting
Starting May 6, 2013, Cape School will be reporting credits to SBS. Cape has 30 days from the date of completion to report credits. The State will be charging a filing fee of $1.00 per credit.
