Continuing Education Requirements

Hours Required

24 credit hours are required biennially, this must include 3 credit hours of Ethics. As of July 1st, 2021 this also includes Adjusters.

Adjusters - Please Note: Adjusters renewing July 31, 2022 or later will need 24 credit hours (including 3 Ethics hours) to renew. Courses must be Washington approved.

Compliance Date

End of licensee's birth month, biennially

Exam Requirements

Exams are open-book and a passing grade of 70% is required on final exams.

Course Subject Requirements

• 3 hours of ethics education must be completed as part of the CE requirement
• Agents can take course from any license type to complete the remaining CE, however the Washington OIC recommends that the agents takes courses within their lines of authority
• Agents selling Long Term Care must complete an approved 4-hour LTC course every 24 months.  For CE credit only once per renewal period.
• All licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies are required to complete a one-time 3-credit course in flood.  
• All licensed producers who sell Annuity Products must hold a producer license with the life line authority, complete a one-time 4-credit course in Annuity Suitability, and provide proof (a copy of the certificate) to the Insurance company that you work for.

Effective July 1, 2021: Licensed Adjusters will be required to complete 24 credit hours of continuing education every two years. Three of these credit hours must be in Ethics.

Carryover Credits

Carryover of excess credits is not permitted.

Course Repetition

Credit will not be given for a course taken more than once during the same renewal period.

Exemptions

• Any person who believes that good cause exists may request a waiver of the CE requirement. A Producer may request a waiver of the CE Requirement due to a medical hardship or if on military duty.
• Non-resident agents are not required to complete continuing education in Washington as long as they are compliant in their home state.

Credit Reporting

CAPE will report credits to the Washington Department of Insurance within 10 days of course completion. We provide a certificate of course completion for the agent’s records.

The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) strongly encourage licensees to complete their CE requirements at least 30 days prior to their license expiration date.

Washington license renewal for Agents has changed.  Now, producers that enter a course when they renew on-line must submit their course certificate. More Information can be found regarding Agent Renewal at:  https://www.insurance.wa.gov/renewing-your-individual-license
